The City of Orillia has received 100 per cent compliance ratings from inspections of the city’s Waste Diversion Site, Wastewater Treatment Centre and the drinking water treatment system by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

“Maintaining top-tier standards across critical areas like water quality, landfill operations, and wastewater treatment is paramount for safeguarding the health and safety of our community,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “Achieving 100 per cent compliance ratings from the ministry reflects the efforts and expertise of our dedicated staff.”

Over the past year, scheduled and non-scheduled inspections have taken place at the city’s Waste Diversion Site, Wastewater Treatment Centre, and of the city’s drinking water treatment system by MECP. All inspections resulted in 100 per cent compliance.

The inspections included reviewing site conditions to verify that the operations are being conducted properly; the infrastructure is in a state of good repair; the results from analysis are reviewed in a timely manner by staff and that any concerns are identified; and reviewing trends, plus other operational logs, maintenance records, and current conditions for compliance to legislative requirements.

While not all areas require annual inspections, the Orillia drinking water system at the Water Filtration Plant and its associated remote stations require MECP inspections each year and over the past four years, all inspections have achieved ratings of 100 per cent.

The annual provincial inspection is a legislative requirement of all municipal drinking water systems under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The primary focus of the inspection is to confirm compliance with MECP legislation, as well as evaluating conformance with ministry drinking water policies and guidelines.

“The inspections, conducted as a legislative requirement under provincial regulations, confirm compliance with MECP legislation and evaluate adherence to ministry policies and guidelines,” said Greg Preston, director of waste management and environmental compliance. “The City of Orillia achieved full compliance with all MECP requirements, affirming its commitment to environmental responsibility and public health.”

The detailed inspection reports are available upon request by contacting Greg Preston, director of waste management and environmental compliance, at [email protected] or 705-325-2444.
