Now, this is something to snort about.

Ralphy's Retreat Animal Sanctuary is hosting its first-ever, fundraising gala May 25 in Barrie as it tries to drum up $20,000 towards the cost of creating a palliative care and hospice barn.

Located just outside Waverley, the non-profit organization is dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals in need, according to sanctuary manager Shannon Leguizamon.

“At Ralphy's, we strive to create a loving environment where animals can thrive and receive the care and support they deserve,” Leguizamon explains.

“Approximately 60 percent of our residents are aged or have some type of special needs. This year’s gala emphasizes our dedication to providing comfort, care and dignity to our animals with serious health conditions.”

All funds raised from the Hospice for Hooves event will go towards creating a palliative care and hospice barn at Ralphy’s Retreat.

“Our aim is to create a peaceful environment where these animals can receive specialized medical attention, pain management and companionship in their final days,” Leguizamon says, noting a number of tradespeople have volunteered their time towards the project, but funding is needed to help towards building costs and other miscellaneous items.

Added Leguizamon: “Our goal is to raise $20,000 towards the cost.”

The gala at the Lion's Gate Banquet Centre will feature entertainment by DJ Andy, fine vegan dining, photography by Morning Glow Photography, a silent auction and special guest speaker Steve Jenkins - proud dad to Esther the Wonder Pig.

An author and animal advocate, Jenkins was an original co-founder of Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary and has dedicated his life to raising awareness about animal welfare and promoting a compassionate lifestyle.

“The journey with Esther has inspired countless people around the world to see pigs and other animals in a new light, highlighting the importance of kindness and understanding towards all creatures,” Leguizamon says.

“Since Esther’s passing, Steve has continued to carry on her legacy by creating Esther’s Angels. Their mission is to provide support to animal sanctuaries across the globe and to aid in their endeavours to provide safe havens for animals in need.”

Barrie TV personality K.C. Colby and Little Charlie the pig will serve as the galas masters of ceremonies with guests given the choice between two scrumptious vegan entrees with special dietary options available for those who advise organizers in advance of any food allergies or other restrictions.

The gala, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is semi-formal with guests free to wear something purple in support of hospice care. Tickets cost $120 and can be purchased here.
