Annette Hird works tirelessly for the youth of Orillia and area.
In 2020, she founded the Hxmesweethxme community group in honour of her nephew, Jake Beers, who she lost to depression, turning a tragedy into an opportunity for social change.
Through the community group, she organizes fundraising events in Jake’s honour, raising money for the Orillia Youth Centre, where Jake was an active member. These events, led by Annette, have raised $40,000 for the Orillia Youth Centre. This money helps to support youth battling mental health issues, providing everything from counselling to purchasing art materials for the youth to express themselves productively. It also allows the Orillia Youth Centre to award bursaries to students to support their learning.
To further her mission of connecting our community, Annette created the With the Help of All My Friends Facebook group, which promotes Orillia businesses, artists and local events, community involvement and bringing our youth’s mental health into the conversation.
She also supports Orillia veterans and Remembrance Day ceremonies, prepares Veteran’s Care Boxes and raised funds for various organizations, including hospice and long-term care homes. Whether it be a big act or a small act, Annette has the drive and generosity to give back to our community.
Annette has carried on her nephew Jake’s legacy and her work is sure to benefit the youth of Orillia for years to come.
The Unsung Hero award is presented to an individual or group whose tireless work and/or volunteer efforts in our community seek to improve the lives of others. The recipient has created a positive impact in our community both now and for the future.
