Pocket Skate and Vintage has created a welcoming and community-focused hub for skaters of all ages and skill levels to come together and enjoy the sport.
The group hosts weekly ladies and 2SLGBTQI+ free skate nights, providing a space of belonging and inclusion for all.
Free lessons are offered to the community on Sunday mornings, which are structured with an individualized approach for each skater's learning needs.
The team's community advocacy extends beyond their storefront, as they partner with local organizations such as The Orillia Native Women's Group and The Orillia Youth Centre, the group provides skate lessons, education and equipment to multiple members of the community.
The Pocket Skate team also serve as stewards for the current skatepark, ensuring that it is well-maintained and safe. They collaborate with the city to add new features paid for by funds raised through their innovative programs.
Their efforts demonstrate how a passion for a particular activity can be used to build a more connected community.
The Sports and Recreation Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to the strength of a sport in the community, by way of inspiring people, establishing a program, mentoring a team or individual to extraordinary accomplishments or setting an example for others to carry.
Congratulations to the team at Pocket Skate and Vintage!
