The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (the board) operates a total of sixteen elementary schools, two secondary schools, and one outdoor education facility in nine different communities. The board invites applications for the following position:
POSITION: Manager of Plant Services
LOCATION: Mount St. Joseph Catholic Education Centre, 100 Ontario Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, ON (On-site)
ANNUALIZED SALARY: $126,416 - $134,644
EFFECTIVE DATE: February 2025
Reporting to the Superintendent of Business, the Manager of Plant Services plays a critical role in providing leadership to Plant Department staff while ensuring effective and efficient operations of various building service functions throughout the school board. The Manager of Plant Services oversees the construction, renovation, repair, security, and maintenance of all board facilities. The Manager of Plant Services will provide leadership in the development of annual Plant budgets, and the Multi-Year Capital Plan. As a member of the Senior Administration Team, the Manager of Plant Services will be committed to excellence, continuous improvement and be a strong team player. The Manager of Plant Services will ensure that all Plant functions are conducted efficiently, in compliance with relevant legislation and applicable codes and in accordance with the Board’s, mission, policies, and Catholic values.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage the construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance of all board facilities.
• Supervise all construction projects, from the selection of architects and engineers through to capital reporting to the Ministry of Education.
• Liaise regularly with external stakeholders including but not limited to architects, engineers, inspectors, and ministry officials.
• Prepare and review annual budgets while implementing budget controls through continuous monitoring and reporting of performance against plans.
• Collaborate with the Superintendent of Business in the establishment of the board’s Multi-Year Capital Plan.
• Maintain the Education Capital Information System (ECIS) and the VFA Facility Database including all capital reporting to the Ministry of Education.
• Ensure all board facilities are equipped with appropriate furniture, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
• Assist in negotiating the Plant collective agreement (i.e., caretakers, maintenance staff).
• Act as a resource to the board, its committees and school administration in all matters related to Plant Services.
• Lead, coach and mentor support staff within the Plant Department to build an effective and cohesive team.
• Monitor energy use and implement reduction strategies while maintaining the Utility Consumption Database
• Report on annual energy consumption to the Ministry of Education.
• Participate in Senior Administrative Team meetings and provide input for decision making.
• Act as a resource for the Board Accessibility Committee.
• Be required to travel occasionally within the board’s jurisdiction.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Professional designation as an Engineer (P. Eng.), Architect (OAA), Engineering Technologist (CET), or Architectural Technologist (AATO) is required.
• Minimum ten (10) years of leadership experience in an architect or engineering environment or equivalent.
• Experience working in an educational and unionized setting.
• Knowledge of any relevant legislation including the Ontario Building Code.
• Experience with managing in a unionized environment.
• Experience with and understanding of departmental finances (e.g., budgets, invoices, liens, cost estimates).
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
• Proven track record of managing projects successfully on time and on budget; experience managing Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC) contracts.
• Ability to manage a variety of complex situations with diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality.
• Familiarity with any or all of the following programs would be considered an asset: AutoCad, MS Word, MS Excel, VFA Facility, eBase, Utility Consumption Database.
