Five more COVID-19 tests have come back positive for individuals at schools in the Catholic school board, while both the public and Catholic boards have now released more details to families on what school will look like in January post-lockdown.

Frances Bagley, director of education for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, sent a letter to families on Tuesday outlining the board’s plans for back-to-school in January.

"Learning expectations, curriculum delivery and assessment will continue. We recognize that some families may have questions or concerns related to what this temporary change means for their child,” wrote Bagley in her message to families. “At this time, we want our students, families and staff to focus on the peace and joy of the Christmas season. We will reach out to families again next week with additional information.”

Starting Jan. 4, all students at the Catholic board will be learning remotely through their virtual classroom. Learners at the elementary level will return to school in person on Jan. 11.

All secondary students will be working remotely from Jan. 4 to 22, and school buildings will be closed to students. In-person classes resume Jan. 25.

On Tuesday at the Catholic board, new COVID-19 cases were reported at Sister Catherine Donnelly Catholic School in Barrie (two cases), St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic School in Bradford (one case), St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School in Barrie (one case) and St. Theresa’s Catholic High School in Midland (one case).

The health unit does not release information about whether positive cases are students or staff due to privacy concerns.

The Simcoe County District School Board has posted a notice on their website as of Friday that they will not be updating COVID-19 numbers again until Jan. 4.

In a statement on the Simcoe County District School Board’s social media posted on Tuesday afternoon, the board outlined their back-to-school plans for January.

“Elementary students, including Grade 7 and 8 students at Elmvale District High School and Stayner Collegiate Institute, will participate in remote learning from Jan. 4 to 8. Elementary students are expected to return to in-person learning on Jan. 11,” they wrote.

Secondary students will participate in remote learning from Jan. 4 to 22 and are expected to return to in-person learning on Jan. 25.

The board noted that transportation services will not be available from Jan. 4 to 8 and will resume for elementary students during the week of Jan. 11.

Students currently enrolled in the Learn@Home program will continue to attend class virtually beginning Jan. 4. Parents and guardians of students in special education classes will be contacted by their child’s teacher on Jan. 4 regarding programming options.
