The man accused of starting the Jan. 21 fire in Orillia will return to court next Friday.

Brandon Costa, 35, made another brief court appearance on Friday via video, where his case was put over another week.

Costa had been on release but was taken back into custody for breaching his conditions. He has had numerous appearances in virtual remand court since that time but remains in custody.

According to police, Costa was found in possession of a lighter — a violation of his release conditions.

Fire tore through a historic downtown building in Orillia last month. There were no injuries, but the building at the corner of Mississauga and Peter streets was declared a total loss with damages estimated at $4 million. The severn businesses in the building were ruined.

Costa, who is from Brampton, was picked up the next day.

In addition to the original arson charge, Costa faces two charges of breaching his release conditions. None of the charges against him have been tested in court.
