I feel compelled to reach out to Orillia residents to get out and support our local sports teams.
Since moving here three years ago, I’ve been coming out to support the Orillia Terriers Jr. C hockey team. It’s getting frustrating to be a regular supporter, giving my moral and verbal support to these young men that demonstrate excellent skills and talent only to be outnumbered in our own home rink by supporters of the visiting team, some travelling by car and buses. Our team is well coached and plays an entertaining, fast level of hockey.
I grew up in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s in the Kitchener area, always aware of the strong provincial baseball, hockey and lacrosse teams from the Orillia area. What ever has happened to that support and community pride?
I gave up watching the overpaid hockey players and teams on TV Saturday nights and now much prefer supporting these young men. The Terriers are one of the elite teams in the league.
You certainly can’t complain about the costs to see them play ($7 for seniors, $12 for adults), so bring the kids and grandchildren out to see the game. Come out and see for yourself. Bring your voices, applause and cowbells. You’ll definitely want to come back. Let’s show the visitors how supportive we can be.
