LETTER: Hall of Fame ouster is 'woke smoke' by city council

'There is a problem of perspective in viewing history through the lens of (the present),' says letter writer

This is the profile of Thomas Gummersall Anderson from the Orillia Hall of Fame booklet published in 2002.

OrilliaMatters welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via the website. Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in response to a previous letter from former city councillor Fayne Bullen about our article 'Council to consider removing controversial Orillia Hall of Famer.'

The esteemed Fayne Bullen is too kind towards the Mariposa Muppets who are taking yet another foray into cancel culture.

First it was Champlain whose "crimes" are viewed through the lens of presentism. Then, Quetton St. George was added to the list of cancel culture candidates for his tavern at The Narrows and the reported effect upon the indigenous population.

Now, their focus turns to Thomas Gummersall Anderson of Coldwater Mill fame. There is no statue to him, but I would not be surprised if efforts were not made to eradicate all evidence of his presence.

There is a problem of perspective in viewing history through the lens of (the present) and when that view is further clouded by woke smoke, one can only wonder what Leacock would make of it.
