A different approach was taken to decorating the Christmas tree at the Orillia Opera House in 2023.

’Tis the season and I was thinking about what we could do to make this Christmas a little more festive.

What if the City of Orillia held a competition to select the person who gets the privilege to be the designer and decorator for the lighting of our Christmas tree?

Selected judges could pick a winner from a field of locals who have designed and decorated Christmas trees donated by the city or possibly sponsored by local businesses and, afterwards, the Christmas trees could be put on display throughout Orillia for all to enjoy.

The winner gets to be the person who designs and decorates the City of Orillia official Christmas tree and has the bragging rights for this honour for that year — a winter version of the summer’s already popular Streets Alive competition.

Maybe we could have all the competitors’ trees on display in one location and it could become a destination for everyone to gather to enjoy the season’s festivities. The Orillia Square mall, for example, would be a safe place for the decorated trees and a great place to keep them secure.

Downtown, at one of the parks or at the mall, wherever, I think this idea would be a wonderful way to make the season a little more festive and spread some joy around Orillia.
