Each year, handmade poppies are placed on the lawn in front of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Orillia as a symbol of remembrance. Orillia's Remembrance Day service begins at 11 a.m. at the cenotaph outside Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.

AN OLD SOLDIER'S PRAYER

Dear Lord, control the thoughts of those who govern us

In this time of turmoil and unrest,

Grant them the strength and wisdom to realize that peace is best,

That each mother's son and daughter may grow up happily mature,

For there is no final victor in the horrors of shot and shell,

No peace and happiness beneath crosses white of those who fought and fell,

They gave their all for you and me in hopes that war would cease,

God, grant the world leaders to lead us as soldiers of peace.
