The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 16 new COVID-19 cases since Friday in today's update (June 28).
There are 97 active cases in the region.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,264 cases of COVID-19 with 11,496 of those cases recovered and 249 cases ending in death.
There are 12 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness, which includes two new hospitalizations since Friday.
The health unit has reported a total of 4,901 variant strain cases, with 57 of those still active.
Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern:
- 3,985 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), up by two cases from Friday
- 164 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, no increase
- 32 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, no increase
- 51 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, up by 17 cases from Friday
- 669 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).
Friday, June 25, the health unit recorded its biggest vaccination day to date with 10,271 doses administered in the region. The previous record was set on June 24 with 9,685 doses administered, and before that on May 21 with 8,505 doses administered.
To date, 390,687 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (64.6 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 150,302 people (24.9 per cent of the population) have also received a second dose.
According to the health unit, 30 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 45 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 25 per cent is unvaccinated.
There are three active outbreaks in the region. The newest outbreak is at a construction site, and was declared June 25. There is one case reported for the outbreak.
There are two outbreaks at group homes in Simcoe County. One outbreak involves six cases (declared June 8) and the other involves 17 cases (declared June 11). Both are unchanged since Friday's report.
Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).
- Barrie (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are listed as community-acquired (no known link).
- Innisfil (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
- Bradford (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are linked to travel.
- Ramara (2): Two youth under 18 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact transmission.
- Penetanguishene (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old.
- New Tecumseth (1): One youth under 18 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link).
- There are five new cases in Muskoka included in today's list, all are in Huntsville.
