Salsa Beats, a popular Latin dance school in Barrie, will soon offer programming in Orillia.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article said the classes are free. That was incorrect. There is a fee for the classes.

A new Latin dance school promises to bring plenty of culture to Orillia this month.

Salsa Beats owner Natasha Matthew says the school has two goals in mind: to create a sense of community and to create good dancers.

“People come through our doors looking to dance salsa, bachata and merengue,” she explained. “They are also looking to make connections with others and make new friends.”

Salsa Beats opened its doors in Barrie in 2015. Since then, Matthew says, it’s grown to attract members from not only Barrie, but from surrounding communities as well.

“I think it’s the social aspect that’s made us a success,” she said. “It keeps people together, it keeps people relaxed, comfortable, and it keeps them coming.”

She says the classes are easy and fun.

“We have more of a problem-solving approach. If you are struggling to learn, our teachers are trained to help you figure out where it is breaking down," she said.

Most Latin dances taught at Salsa Beats require a partner, but there are options.

“I have a system where I pair individuals up with (experienced) dancers who are looking to come to classes to perfect and help with ratios,” Matthew said. “That way, it’s accessible to anyone.”

Matthew, who was born in Russia, and moved to Canada in 2015, learned about Latin dance while living in New Zealand.

“Somebody took me to a dance club, where I had a kind partner,” she said. “They let me mess up and made me think I could dance.”

While going through a divorce, Latin dancing allowed her to rediscover her femininity.

“It was a healing experience,” she said. “To lead and to follow while you are in the dance and in the music, it’s like the world stops.”

Latin dance gives her a rest from her daily responsibilities.

“It’s a break from work, cleaning of the home, and kids,” she said. “Basically, you disconnect from all your worries.”

Classes in Orillia will begin May 12 at The Holding Space, a yoga studio at 27 Mississaga St. E.
