Three small fires were set inside the new apartment building at 75 Barrie Road on Tuesday morning.

The Orillia Fire Department responded to multiple small fires that were set early this morning inside the new apartment building that is under construction at 75 Barrie Road.

Acting fire chief Chris Ferry says 10 firefighters arrived on scene around 4 a.m.

“When fire crews arrived, they found three small rubbish fires ... inside the building,” he said.

“It doesn’t appear to be accidental; it was definitely suspicious in nature.”

Ferry says there were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters and the small fires have caused about $200 worth of damage.

“There was mostly smoke in the building instead of a fire. The fire crew ventilated the building, and we left some windows and doors open to let the building air out,” he said.

Ferry says it is safe for construction workers to resume building today.
