A Sunday afternoon fire on a balcony at a Barrie Road apartment building caused about $170,000 in damages, officials say.

A fire that erupted on a balcony at a Barrie Road apartment building caused about $170,000 worth of damages to the building.

"The fire started from improperly discarded smoking materials on the balcony," Orillia Fire Chief Michael Clark told OrilliaMatters.

He said there was "fire damage into the apartment, smoke damage to the balcony above and water ran into the apartment below," causing damage there as well.

There were no injuries reported, said Clark of the fire that occurred at the oldest of the three apartment complexes that line Barrie Road near Andrew Street.

Clark said two pumper trucks, an aerial truck and a rescue vehicle responded to the incident that occurred at around 2 p.m. Sunday.
