Baseboard heater caused early morning blaze in Oro-Medonte, officials say

Eleven apparatus from four different stations — as well as a tanker from neighbouring Severn Township — worked to extinguish fire

An early morning fire at an Oro-Medonte automotive business was caused by a baseboard heater, say local fire officials.

The call for a blaze came in around 5:30 a.m., said Fire Chief Roree Payment, telling BarrieToday when crews arrived at the Line 12 business they found a mobile office on fire and quickly got to work to put it out.

“When crews arrived, they noticed that it had spread to an adjacent structure and immediately went into fire suppression activities,” he said.

Eleven apparatus from four different stations — as well as a tanker from neighbouring Severn Township — and approximately 35 firefighters were on scene to fight the fire, he added, which has been determined to have been started by a baseboard heater in the mobile office.

“We were able to bring the fire under control within about 45 minutes and no additional structures were damaged,” said Payment, adding fire crews were packed up and gone from the scene by 8 a.m.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire, said Payment, adding a damage estimate has not yet been determined.
