'Bittersweet': Famous Wok closing after 22 years at mall

Famous Wok co-owner, Linda Chow, said she and her husband are closing the restaurant at the end of the summer to begin enjoying their retirement.

After more than two decades in the Orillia Square mall, Famous Wok will soon be closing permanently.

The popular Chinese food restaurant has been a fixture at the mall since opening in July 2001, and it is now the last restaurant standing at its food court – that is, until it closes at the end of August.

Linda Chow, who runs the restaurant with her husband, said the two are stepping away from the business to enjoy their retirement.

“Now we're in our 60s and we thought, well, since our lease is up … (it’s) the right time to just close and retire, and enjoy life a little bit more,” Chow told OrilliaMatters.

She said closing the restaurant will be “bittersweet” after so many years.

“It's good because you do have some days when you're busy, which is great, but you're exhausted when you come home,” Chow said. “It’s been up and down, too, but usually it’s just the two of us, my husband and I working, so we do the best we can and we managed.”

Some community members have already heard about Famous Wok’s incoming closure, and Chow said “every second customer is saying, ‘I heard you’re closing, is that true?’”

“I would like to thank them for their business and patronage all through the years supporting our business,” she said.

Mall officials did not respond to requests for comment on the future of the food court prior to publication of this article.
