Blacksmith Gastropub in Moonstone starting to brew up success

'People love the comfortable atmosphere,' says owner of Blacksmith Gastropub, noting patrons like that 'it's not fancy and there aren't a lot of frills'

The Blacksmith Gastropub in Moonstone is finding its footing after spending much of its first year dealing with the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns that forced them to serve takeout only for much of the time.

Owner Steve Lumree says it was difficult and frustrating for him to invest in a local eatery that was making little in sales to support it.

“This has financially taken a major toll on me,” he said.

Since fully opening the restaurant at 246 Moonstone Rd. E. in October 2022, interest has increased, Lumree says, but the hardships are far from over.

“We are really short on staff,” he said. “Every industry right now is scrambling to find bodies to work.”

The small pub has only three employees, but Lumree says he has come too far to give up, especially because he strongly believes in the concept of his pub.

He says the property was originally owned by the Shannon brothers, who were the first blacksmiths in Moonstone in 1890.

In 1947, the property was owned by Lumree’s great-uncle, who raced motorcycles and used it as a garage before it went up in flames along with a neighbouring general store in 1949.

“The fire took down the blacksmith shop, the garage, and the general store next door,” Lumree explained. “My great-grandfather owned a property up on the 7th Line, so they sold my great-uncle the lot and the village people rallied to build a new garage and new general store.”

Lumree, a chef for 30 years, says it’s important to create a central community hub where people can meet with old friends and make new ones, all while celebrating the legacy of his family and the Shannon brothers.

The restaurant’s menu includes chicken wings, nachos, and traditional pub food, but they have also expanded into pizza and upscale entrees.

“We are looking at adding steak, seafood, and pasta dinners,” he explained. “That’s all in development right now.”

Lumree says almost all reviews of the pub have been five stars so far.

“People love the comfortable atmosphere,” he said. “It’s not fancy and there aren’t a lot of frills. It’s a very generic country pub and that’s what people like about it.”
