NEWS RELEASE
BRECHIN PUBLIC SCHOOL

Throughout the year, the Brechin Eco Team plan, educate and lead the student body in various environmental issues. Last year they fundraised, purchased and planted 130 cedar trees.
While watering them they carried pails of water, which sparked conversation of our water. As a result, this year they wanted to have a focus on water.
Win #1 – Our environment benefitted from the textile drive they implemented. This diverted a great deal of textiles from our landfill.
Win # 2 – Our fundraising campaign was a huge success. The textile drive was done in partnership with the Kidney Foundation. A local business, 2nd Chance, also supported the efforts by donating their excess textiles for our drive. As a result, we raised $689.
Win # 3 – A Water Protection and Awareness campaign was launched with the collaboration of the Social Change Makers Group and the Eco Team. The Social Change Makers sold metal water bottles and families could have the child’s name on the bottle using a Cricket. This helped our focus on reusable water bottles.
The two teams planned and delivered an assembly to the school this week. After the assembly the entire student population did a “Water Walk For Awareness”.
Students made signs and proudly walked the neighbourhood to share their message. The money raised will be donated to Water First, an organization which supports providing clean water to local indigenous communities.
This has been a wonderful learning experience for all students. All classes continued their learning by participating in an Enhanced Learning Experience this week. This was delivered by the Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority. This opportunity was provided through a successful grant application from the Ministry of Education.
Today, Brechin Public School students presented a donation to the Water First Organization as a result of their hard work this school year. The students hope to see these funds go towards helping communities access safe water and help support other Water First initiatives.
