Calling all local single men: Speed dating coming to Kelsey's in March

'There are women out there in this age group that still like to get out and be active, but it's so hard to meet somebody, it seems,' says organizer of 50-plus event

Linda Ryersee is organizing a speed dating event for people 50 and older on March 1.

A unique opportunity to mingle and make new connections is coming to Orillia on Friday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m.

The Kelsey’s banquet room will host a speed dating event exclusively for individuals 50 and older. The event is organized by Linda Ryersee, who was inspired by conversations with her book club friends.

“Some of the ladies from my book club are single, intelligent, vibrant, and active,” Ryersee said. “So, we were talking about the idea of speed dating, and I thought it would be fun to try.”

Ryersee took partr in speed dating several years ago in Barrie and said it was “a blast.” She sees this as a chance to bring a similar experience to Orillia.

“I’ve seen a resurgence of speed dating in other communities,” she said. “It’s basically a game but also a different way to have fun and get out.”

The event will feature short, structured conversations lasting five to seven minutes per participant. To keep the conversation flowing, each table will include prompts, ensuring no one feels stuck for topics.

“You’ll get to talk to other people to see if you have a spark with someone or something in common,” Ryersee explained.

She emphasized speed dating offers a safer alternative to online dating or meeting someone independently.

“You are meeting in an open space with different people,” she said. “It’s organized, and I have the name, number, address, and a photo of every participant. It’s safer and a little more monitored.”

Participants are encouraged to focus on lighthearted questions about hobbies, travel, animals, and bucket lists, steering clear of overly personal inquiries.

“We want them to get to know each other on a different level,” Ryersee said.

She hopes the event might lead to new relationships or, at the very least, new friendships.

“If nothing else, maybe people will just make a new friend,” she said. “It’s a good way to socialize a little bit.”

Beyond the potential for romance, Ryersee believes the event can also help build confidence and improve conversation skills.

While interest from women has been strong, as Ryersee has already reached capacity for female participants, she’s still searching for more men to balance the event. Currently, only three men have registered.

“I could not dig a man up if I tried,” she joked. “There are women out there in this age group that still like to get out and be active, but it’s so hard to meet somebody, it seems.”

Men interested in participating can email Ryersee at [email protected]. The cost to attend is $20, which includes a complimentary drink.
