NEWS RELEASE
TOWNSHIP OF RAMARA RECREATION DEPARTMENT
***********************
As the weather gets warmer, we are getting ready for summer here at the Ramara Centre, and it’s going to be a busy one! We have dozens of summer camps for kids of all ages being offered, with something sure to pique everyone’s interests. Our summer camps can be divided into those for ages 4-6, 7-10, 9-13 as well as our specialty camps for our campers with specific goals for the week.
Some of our favourites that are coming up this summer include:
Outdoor Adventurers – For our 4-6-year-old explorers in the area, this week we will be learning all about camping and living in the outdoors! Basic skills will be learned like finding water in the wild, s’more making, pitching a tent, solar ovens, and so much more. This is sure to be a jam-packed week of awesome adventures in the outdoors!
STEAM – For our 7-10-year-olds that love hands-on learning, building and experimenting. This week we will be spending a day on each area that STEAM covers – science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Campers will have independent projects as well as team work, and get a chance to try out all kinds of different things that spark their creativity!
Outdoor Leadership – Similar to the Outdoor Aventurers camp for the 4-6-year-olds, this leadership camp for the 9-13-year-olds is a popular one. Time will be spent on survival skills, but we have the ability to go much more in depth with the older group! They learn things like plant and animal recognition, building a fire, pitching a tent, basic wilderness first aid, finding and sanitizing water, and so much more. A busy week, but always full of fun and adventure.
You’re a Wizard Camper – One of our most exciting camps this summer for 9-13-year-olds! We will start the week off with a sorting hat placing campers into their houses – Griffyndor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherine. Campers will then spend the week competing in house challenges, playing quidditch, learning potions and defense against the dark arts and becoming great wizards. This is going to be a week full of magic.
So You Wanna Be a Camp Counsellor – New this year, a week of leadership training and working on skills needed to work in a camp setting. We will work on skills like leading a group, time filling games, ice breakers, leadership skills, team-building, scheduling and so much more. A great start to developing professional skills while having fun in a camp setting, for ages 10 and up!
Leaders in Training – For our older leadership campers, ages 13 and up, we spend this week honing in on our leadership skills, professional development and working to bring out the leaders of tomorrow! This week we touch on the basics, but also learn about behaviour management, program planning, resume writing, interview skills, inclusion and accessibility and much more. Successful completion of this program also allows campers to have the opportunity to volunteer in camp for a week this summer to have hands on experience utilizing their new training.
Volleyball Skills - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Skills camps are all offered by the Orillia Suns coaches and former players. Beginners (8 years+ with little to no experience) and intermediate programs (OVA or school team experience) focus on learning the game and practicing their skills with the supervision of experts, while the advanced program for high school-aged students who play OVA focuses on tuning up skills in the off season and having more one-on-one coaching available. All of the programs are a great experience regardless of your level of play, and are sure to be a ton of fun while playing the sport!
Theatre Arts Camp – The perfect way to end our summer! Campers aged 10-16 spend two weeks in camp with us working on dancing, singing and acting and put on a full musical theatre production at the end of the second week complete with lights, sound, props, costumes and set pieces. Campers receive their scripts and music to practice at home, finishing the summer with two shows to perform for any family and friends, and a CAST PARTY to wrap it all up!!
If all of these amazing options weren’t enough, add eight amazing, energetic camp staff to the mix and you won’t believe how much fun can be had. Our staff are all trained in First Aid/CPR, have years of hands-on experience working in the camp setting, and LOVE to have fun.
Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ramara Centre, but we have staff here from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for those parents that need extended care hours for only $3 extra per day.
