Car crashes into transformer at opera house (update: tonight's performance postponed)

Driver, 89, taken to hospital as precaution

3:30 p.m. update

The collision and resulting power outage have led the Orillia Public Library to close for rest of the day. Also, tonight's Barra MacNeils concert at the opera house has been postponed until June 6.

Original 1:50 p.m. information

An elderly man was taken to hospital Thursday after his car slammed into a transformer at the Orillia Opera House.

The collision happened at about 12:45 p.m., said Fire Chief Ralph Dominelli.

Police said the 89-year-old man was not injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The collision lifted the 3,000-pound transformer off its base and knocked out power to a large part of the downtown.

Officials said the crash led to a fire, whose flames were as high as the trees in front of the opera house.
