Orillia city council does not currently accept online petitions, but that could change in 2025.

"It's the 21st century. It's time to consider it," said Coun. Janet-Lynne Durnford on Monday, at the first meeting of council this year.

Durnford championed an inquiry motion to amend the city's municipal code to enable the submission of online petitions. The motion was carried.

"This arose out of correspondence to council. There are a number of municipalities that accept online petitions ... some even accept Change.org petitions. It's very reasonable to look into," Durnford explained.

Orillia could enable petitions through the city's website, she said.

She added the collection of signatures in person can be a barrier from an accessibility standpoint.

Staff will report back on the idea at a future meeting.
