A fire on Highway 12 seemingly began in the garage of a residential home on Tuesday morning.

A residential home on Highway 12 near Coldwater was destroyed in an early morning fire Tuesday.

Jenny Leggett, communications officer for Oro-Medonte. says the fire was reported at approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning by somebody passing by. She says it appears the fire began in the garage area.

One occupant of the home was woken up by the blaze and escaped uninjured.

Despite the efforts of around 20 firefighters from both Oro-Medonte and Severn to extinguish the blaze, the home is a "total loss," Leggett says.

A damage estimate was not provided.

Brooklyn Harker, media relations co-ordinator for OPP's central region, says Highway 12 between Oro-Medonte Side Road 2 and Dunns Line was closed for most of the day but re-opened before 2 p.m.

She says the fire appears to have been started by an extension cord in the garage and has been deemed non-suspicious.

There were no reported injuries.
