All of us have our own special traditions and fun things about Christmas.
It’s the time of year when we spend time with family and friends and take some time to relax and enjoy the season.
We exchange gifts, decorate our trees, enjoy winter activities like skiing, skating and tobogganing.
For basketball fans, the NBA has a full slate of games on Dec. 25. It’s one of their biggest days of the year. For hockey fans, the world junior hockey championships kick off around Christmas and the tournament has become a classic Canadian holiday tradition.
Children enjoy time off from school – as do their teachers.
For me, Christmas means many different things.
Egg nog in the fridge, gift wrapping and classic Christmas movies like Christmas Vacation, Rudolph, A Christmas Story, Charlie Brown’s Christmas and more.
Christmas is definitely one of my favourite times of the year. I take time off to relax and recharge. It’s a chance to reflect and look forward. It’s a great season.
But there is one thing that makes the Christmas season the happiest time of the year for me: the Big Bang Theory marathon on the Comedy Network!
I look forward to it every year. It really is the gift that keeps on giving year after year after year!
I talk about the marathon throughout the year with my brother Kevin. Around Thanksgiving our anticipation begins to grow. As we munch on Thanksgiving dinner we know that the marathon is just a couple of short months away.
The marathon means so much to us. I know that streaming services have changed the way we watch and consume entertainment. But, the marathon harkens back to a different time. Remember the old days of turning the TV on and hoping something good was on? With the marathon, when we turn the TV on, we know there is always something good on!
The adventures of Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, Howard, Penny, Amy and Bernadette are always hilarious and fun.
The show is full of discussions about video games, comic books, movies and science. It’s packed with celebrity cameos. The episodes seem to get funnier each year – no matter how many times we’ve watched them. Seriously, if you like the show, go back and watch the episode when Amy ruins Raiders of the Lost Ark for the guys. It’s a masterpiece of television comedy.
For me, each year, the soundtrack for Christmas always starts with: “our whole universe was in a hot dense state…”
Just thinking about it has me craving a nice glass of egg nog and gingerbread man cookie.
