The Rolling Stones are not coming to Orillia. Or are they?
When a group of parishioners get together to raise money for a new church roof they begin in the traditional manner by forming a committee to brainstorm ideas. Shall they have a bake sale? A silent auction?
It is not until they decide to hire the Rolling Stones that things become less traditional. This is the premise of Get What You Need, a comedic play being presented as a staged reading at St. James’ Anglican Church in Orillia on June 10 at 2 and 7 p.m.
Get What You Need, written by Jackie Bennett from the Severn Township area, has been produced as a staged reading in Uxbridge and a full production in Barrie. It was also chosen from over 70 submissions as one of five plays to be part of the “Four Play” festival with Simcoe Theatre in 2018.
This is a joint venture between the parishes of St. James’ Orillia and Washago-Price’s Corners with proceeds from the ticket sales going to the Community Breakfast Program that is offered every Sunday from 8:30 to 9:30 am at St. James.
It provides a wonderful hot meal including pancakes, egg burritos, breakfast sandwiches, French toast, sausage, bacon, cereal, fruit, and more. It serves the community by helping those who suffer from food insecurity. St. James, St. David, and St. Athanasius have come together to bring about this program along with community partners who help prepare the meals and local businesses that provide food and assistance.
Bennett is a published author. Her young adult novel, When Am I Supposed to Sleep? was published in 2019 with Rocks Mills Press. The sequel, as well as a guide to teaching drama, are slated to be released this year.
A love of singing and songwriting led to the creation of Star So Bright: A Journey of Faith, a presentation of song and word, that has been performed at various venues in Ontario for over 10 years. Get What You Need is her first play.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the office of St. James’ or by emailing [email protected].
