Green Orillia has been at the forefront of environmental initiatives for the last six years.
The grassroots group is a dedicated and driven community organization focused on climate action, social justice, advocacy, education and community resilience.
The volunteer-run organization was founded in 2018 by Gillian Lowry and has been stewarded by Madeleine Fournier since 2020.
The team at Green Orillia works hard to raise awareness of the environmental issues faced by Orillians today and to make changes that improve the quality of life in the community for tomorrow. Their work ranges from civic engagement, to supporting food and housing security initiatives and organizing community garbage cleanups.
“This award really means a lot to us. It’s a testament to the power of grassroots activism. Green Orillia started on social media and it’s evolved from there into something really big,” said Madeleine. “It's touching to hear that people are positively impacted by the work we’re doing.”
“Green Orillia deserves this award for all the work they do in our community,” said Morgan Mansfield from Morgan’s Monarchs & Orillia Butterflyway. “They are a true community builder. They don’t just strive to be a voice for change: they strive to empower other voices for change.”
One of the organization's main goals is to encourage people to show up and get involved in the community.
“If we don’t, then decisions get made without us. I want to recognize everyone who has been a part of Green Orillia, but especially Jacob, Thomas and Cliff, who have been instrumental co-organizers in many of the initiatives,” Madeleine added.
The Environment Award goes to a person or group that has had an important positive impact on our environment, both man-made and natural.
Congratulations, Green Orillia!
