The province’s coroner’s office is investigating the death of an inmate last week at the Central North Correctional Centre.
While the death occurred December 22, officials remain tight-lipped about the cause of the inmate’s death or his identity.
“Given the matter is the subject of both an internal and coroner’s investigation, it would be inappropriate to provide further detail,” Ministry of the Solicitor General spokesman Brent Ross said.
“Should the coroner’s investigation determine the death was anything other than natural causes, a mandatory inquest will be held. In the case that the death was due to natural causes, the holding of the inquest will be at the discretion of the Office of the Chief Coroner.”
Richard Dionne is president of CNCC-369, representing correctional officers working at the Penetanguishene facility.
“I can confirm there was a death at the institution, however I can't provide any details surrounding the death or the identity of the victim,” Dionne said. “Surely, you can appreciate the sensitivity of this matter.”
