The flag is flying and the countdown is on.
Officials raised the Orillia Scottish Festival flag Monday morning at the Orillia Opera House, drawing attention to the 42nd annual event, which will take place Friday to Sunday.
On hand Monday was Will Kinghorn, who has been overseeing the Scottish country dancing at the festival for three years. He has also danced at the event for 14 years.
“I think our festival is one of the last Scottish festivals in Ontario to have Scottish country dancing in the opening ceremonies,” he said, referring to it as “a very social dance.”
Those who miss the opening ceremonies will have plenty of chances to see dancing on the weekend. From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, visitors check out country dancing and even try it themselves at the pavilion near the shore.
“It doesn’t matter what age. The smile on their faces is great,” Kinghorn said. “It’s a learning opportunity.”
Visitors can also learn about the different Scottish clans and the meanings behind their tartans.
Admission to the festival is granted to those who purchase a $2 button at the gate.
Saturday is the only day there will be activities at Couchiching Beach Park. Other events are happening Friday and Sunday at the Legion.
