The former Orillia OPP building will soon be demolished.
The city has announced the structure at 66 Peter St. S. will be torn down starting the week of July 26.
The project was approved as part of the city’s 2021 capital budget, and the timeline is as expected.
“The OPP were able to officially vacate the building at the end of March 2021 and the demolition project is currently on track with anticipated timelines of fall 2021,” said Jennifer Ruff, the city’s director of business development and communications.
The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 1. After that, new permit parking spots will be created on the site. The plan is to have those spots available by winter. The adjacent permit parking spots in Municipal Lot 3 will not be affected by the demolition.
During demolition, a construction fence will surround the property and there will be concrete barriers at all laneway entrances and exits at the end of the project.
The property will eventually become the site of the city’s new transit terminal. Ruff said staff are developing a request for proposals for the design of the terminal. She said construction is expected in mid-2023 at the earliest.
