ORILLIA MUSEUM OF ART & HISTORY

Glenn Gould, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, lived in the Beaches in Toronto, yet he is an honouree in the Orillia Hall of Fame. How was he connected to Orillia?
It was Gould’s love of life at the family cottage at Uptergrove on Macdonald Bay in Lake Simcoe that tied him to our area. The “Cottage” offered solace and anonymity for Gould, away from the busy city life and the fame that his immeasurable talent brought.
His love of nature and passion for boating rejuvenated him.
Join us May 15 at the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH) to hear Dr. Chris Decker shed light on the fascinating life of Glenn Gould.
Gould’s bond to Uptergrove and to Orillia will be explored through a multimedia presentation by Dr. Decker entitled “Glenn Gould: his life, his cottage, his Orillia connection”. It is not to be missed.
Dr. Chris Decker is a retired general surgeon and history lover. He has been associated with Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital since 1987 and spent six years (2004 – 2010) with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine as Director of the Clinical Clerkship.
Dr. Decker has delivered talks at OMAH about Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae and the history of Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.
Admission to the Speakers Evening is free, although donations to OMAH are appreciated. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the talk starts at 7:30 p.m.
After this month’s talk, the History Speaker Series will take a break for the summer. Mark your calendars for the following talks:
October 16 - Orillia Secondary School students: From Ortona to Juno – A Journey of Remembrance
November 20 – Fred Kallin: Raoul Wallenberg – Legendary Hero
The members of the OMAH History Committee celebrated capacity crowds three months in a row for the History Speakers.
They thank the community for its tremendous support. The committee is busy putting together a list of dynamic speakers and topics for 2020. Stay tuned!
