NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF ORILLIA
*************************
The City of Orillia is following up with the community about its vision for the future of downtown Orillia streets at a second public workshop on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The meeting will be held in the Tudhope-McIntyre Boardroom on the main floor of the Orillia City Centre.
A re-imagined view of Orillia’s downtown streetscapes, based on the feedback received during the first public visioning workshop held in August 2018, will be presented to those in attendance.
A presentation by Stantec Consulting Ltd. will start at 5:45 p.m., followed by an interactive group discussion and workshop. Registration is not required for the workshop, but is appreciated, and can be submitted through the project website at orillia.ca/streets4all.
In anticipation of the future need to reconstruct Mississaga Street within the downtown, the city has launched the Downtown Orillia Streetscape Improvement Plan (DOSIP) to reimagine and redesign Orillia’s downtown streets.
Furthering the vision of the Downtown Tomorrow Plan, the objective of the DOSIP is to generate a new vitality in Orillia’s core by creating a beautiful and welcoming downtown environment.
The DOSIP will look to create a unique sense of place by enhancing the connection to the waterfront, facilitating pedestrian comfort and safety, increasing accessibility and generating new investment interest in Orillia’s downtown.
The latest design techniques and standards of sustainability have been integrated into the new design. Walkways, alleyways, municipally-owned parking facilities, and public gathering spaces will all serve to enhance and connect not only the downtown streets with each other, but with Orillia’s waterfront area.
Building on the momentum of the Centennial Drive Relocation Project and the Front Street Reconstruction Project, the DOSIP will further contribute to the enhancement and revitalization of the city’s downtown core and waterfront area.
The DOSIP project began in June 2018 with a review and inventory of the project area.
Since that time, the project team has been working on the development of a comprehensive streetscape plan, and is now looking to provide the public with updates on their progress.
It is anticipated the final streetscape plan will be presented to council for consideration in March 2019.
