Meridian's Orillia branch remains standing after the Jan. 21 fire destroyed the adjacent building, but it has heavy smoke and water damage, according to a Meridian representative.

"The extent of the damage caused by the fire is devastating and heartbreaking," said Akihito Tse, senior communications adviser for Meridian.

"We want to thank the firefighters, first responders and community support organizations who stepped up with speed and courage in a time of need.

"We empathize with our neighbouring residents and businesses, and, in particular, to those who are now displaced by the fire."

The branch will remain closed until the adjacent historic building — that housed Kelly's Klothing, Dr. Comics, Three Birds Salon and Three Crows Speak Studio — is demolished and the city has made an assessment of the area.

"We are unable to put a firm timeline on when the branch will reopen," Tse said.

Nine staff worked at the Orillia branch, including the manager. Meridian is offering staff positions at other branches.

"A plan is in place to support employees and facilitate their temporary relocation within the organization," Tse said.

Meridian customers can continue to contact the branch by telephone, email or through the mobile app or connect directly with someone at another branch. There are three branches in Barrie: 85 Bayfield St., Unit 102, 410 Essa Rd., Unit A1-A, and 592 Yonge St.

"Orillia thrives on the downtown core, and we know we have a role in supporting our community in these challenging times," Tse said.
