MARIPOSA HOUSE HOSPICE

For the fifth year running, Sue Morris led the efforts to raise money for Mariposa House Hospice through what is known as the Angel Tree.
This year, in spite of it being a very difficult for so many, the individual donations added up to more than $27,000, a record-breaking amount by far. The five-year total is now more than $85,000.
“We are so grateful to the hundreds of earth angels who came by to make a donation and hang an ornament in memory of a loved one. It is a simple yet such a meaningful way to remember those we loved and lost,” said Morris.
This special fundraising project got its start with an idea from supporter Brenda Stanley. This was followed by a donation of the Christmas tree and the glass angel ornaments from Kristopher Orchard Campbell and Jamie Campbell, owners of the OC Emporium in downtown Orillia.
The generosity of Bob Willsey of Mariposa Market, who has provided space at the front of his store for the tree and the volunteer table, brought it all together.
All proceeds from the donations to the Angel Tree go directly to Mariposa House Hospice. This five-bed residential hospice opened in February 2021. It serves Orillia, the surrounding townships, and Chippewas of Rama First Nation.
Mariposa House Hospice executive director, Annelise Stenekes said, “Looking at the tree, covered with hundreds and hundreds of angel ornaments and messages honouring those who have died, is such a visual reminder that we all carry both love and loss with us each day as we go about our lives. To me, this tree is a beautiful reminder to be gentle with ourselves and with each other throughout the holiday season and all year long.”
