Fire destroys Uptergrove home; nobody was home at time of blaze

'The cause of the fire is underdetermined. I’m not sure exactly what happened,' says Ramara Fire Chief of fire that caused about $800,000 in damages

A fire destroyed a family's home in Ramara Township Saturday night.

“There was no one home at the time, and it was a rural property with the closest neighbour being probably 300 metres away,” Ramara Fire Chief Tony Stong said of the blaze on Concession 12 in Uptergrove.

“The fire was really able to get going and undetected by anyone until a neighbour, who was quite a distance away, saw the smoke and flames. By the time the fire was called in and we arrived on scene the building was pretty consumed," the chief explained.

The result of the fire is a total loss of the home; Stong estimates about $800,000 in damages.

“There was no injuries or anything like that. The cause of the fire is undetermined. I’m not sure exactly what happened,” he said.

Because of the ferocity of the fire, Stong believes it will be difficult for investigators to determine the cause of the weekend blaze.

He said 38 Ramara Township firefighters battled the fire for several hours Saturday night. He said they were assisted by firefighters from Rama First Nation with shuttling water to the scene.

Stong noted the occupants of the home had been in touch with their insurance company and seemed to have a place to stay for the short term.
