The cause of the fire was related to smoking — and flowerpots; nobody was injured in the blaze, officials say

Early this morning, firefighters were called to a home on Laclie Street, where they found a fire on a deck of the home.

As the old song goes, "smoking ain't allowed in school." Perhaps it should not be allowed on decks.

This morning at 5:45 a.m., a fire erupted on the deck of a home located at the corner of Laclie and Brant streets.

"The crews arrived and found the deck on fire," said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Ferry.

He said eight firefighters were able to douse the blaze and contained the fire to the deck. However, there was some smoke in the home.

The two occupants of the house were checked by paramedics, but there were no injuries.

"The cause of fire was found to be a cigarette butt placed in a plastic hanging flowerpot," explained Ferry. "The flowerpot caught fire which then fell on the wooden deck."

It was the second structure fire of the night for local crews. Earlier on Halloween evening, there was a fire at a 12-unit apartment building on King Street; smoke damage was sufficient that all tenants had to find somewhere else to spend the night.
