Firefighters smother third-floor kitchen blaze in apartment building

'When we arrived an apartment unit and the hallway on the third floor were full of smoke,' says deputy fire chief of afternoon blaze on West Street North

The Orillia Fire Department and other emergency services personnel responded to an apartment fire on Thursday afternoon.

Deputy Fire Chief Chris Ferry says crews were called to the Westview Place apartment complex on West Street North at 2:53 p.m.

"When we arrived an apartment unit and the hallway on the third floor were full of smoke," he said. "The occupant was able to get out by herself before we got here."

Ferry says firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the kitchen area of the apartment. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

"When we got here the fire alarm was activated and the occupants were evacuating," he said.

Ferry says there were no injuries to firefighters or residents of the apartment complex.

"The occupant was checked by paramedics on scene, and they are not going to the hospital," he explained.

Ferry says the department has yet to determine the amount of damage to the unit, but there is nothing suspicious about the blaze.

Most residents of the apartment started returning to their units on Thursday afternoon just before 3:30 p.m. following a completed carbon monoxide check by firefighters.
