This week's white powder is like gold for local skiers.

Horseshoe Valley Resort says "it's time to kick off an incredible winter season" with the slopes opening Friday and continuing over the weekend for skiing and snowboarding. Horseshoe will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. over the three days.

Horseshoe didn't indicate how many of its 29 runs will be open, but ski stations typically stagger the number of runs open as their groomers work their magic.

Mount St. Louis Moonstone is celebrating its 60th season this year. It will also be open Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 14 of its 36 slopes open and liftees manning four lifts throughout the day. The ski station reports that it currently has a base depth of 20 to 50 centimetres. One of the terrain parks will also be open Friday.

"Opening Day always brings a special energy to the mountain, and this year is even more meaningful as we celebrate 60 incredible years,” said Robert Huter,
owner and general manager of Mount St. Louis Moonstone.

“We’re excited to welcome guests back for another unforgettable season filled with milestones, memories, and, of course, great skiing and snowboarding.”

Blue Mountain Resort is officially kicking off its season Saturday with runs open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather and conditions permitting. The resort didn't indicate how many runs will be open.
