For over 30 years, Green Haven Shelter for Women has been a lifeline for families fleeing gender-based violence in Orillia and surrounding areas.

While the shelter is well known for providing immediate safety and crisis intervention for women, one of its most impactful and forward-thinking programs is its Child & Youth Program. This initiative focuses on empowering young people through education, healing, and growth, helping them break the cycle of violence.

At Green Haven, we believe in the power of education as a catalyst for long-term change.

Our commitment to fostering lifelong learning extends not only to the women in our shelter but also to the children who are too often silent victims of domestic violence. Children who witness violence at home report direct emotional or psychological harm, with 60 per cent of them affected, while between 50 to 60 per cent may develop PTSD or anxiety.

The Child & Youth Program provides young survivors with essential resources such as safe spaces, counselling, and academic support, all designed to rebuild confidence and offer a path to a brighter future.

As Linda Reid, executive director of Green Haven, puts it, “If we fail to educate the next generation about the dangers and consequences of abuse and violence against women, we won’t see meaningful change in our lifetime. That’s not good enough for us.”

These children, many of whom have witnessed or experienced traumatic violence, are at an increased risk of becoming either victims or abusers themselves if left unsupported. By focusing on their emotional and educational development, Green Haven helps them rebuild their sense of self-worth and equips them with the tools they need to thrive in a healthy and violence-free environment.

“We’d like to increase our focus on youth healing and prevention,” Reid says. “We want to seize every opportunity to both teach and learn, creating an environment that fosters growth, understanding, and empowerment.”

Why education matters

Educating young people about the consequences of violence is a crucial step in preventing future abuse. Through workshops, one-on-one counselling, and group activities, the program helps children process their experiences, understand their emotions, and learn healthier ways to relate to others. The aim is not only to support these children as they recover but also to equip them with the knowledge and skills to break the cycle of violence for future generations.

As part of Green Haven’s broader mission, the Child & Youth Program embodies the shelter’s core belief in lifelong learning. It’s a proactive approach to addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, while simultaneously providing immediate care for those affected.

“Education is the foundation of a safer, more informed society,” says Reid. “By investing in the education of young people, we are working toward a future where violence is no longer tolerated, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

How you can help

For donors and sponsors, supporting Green Haven’s Child & Youth Program is not just an act of charity — it’s an investment in the future of our community. Your contributions directly support educational initiatives that empower individuals, foster learning, and drive positive social change. Donations are used strategically to fund academic support, counselling, and enrichment activities that make a tangible difference in the lives of these children.

“We believe in the transformative power of education,” Reid explains. “Your donations help ensure that children impacted by violence receive the education, care, and support they need to grow into empowered adults who contribute to a safer society.”

Join us in making a difference

This November, Green Haven will host its first-ever After Dark fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the Child & Youth Program. The event, taking place on Nov. 9 at the Orillia Square mall, promises to be a fun-filled evening of live entertainment, carnival games, and a silent auction. The goal is to raise $20,000 to fund the vital services that help these young survivors heal and grow.

“This is your chance to enjoy a memorable night out while making a tangible difference in the lives of children affected by domestic violence,” says Reid. “Whether you’re bringing friends, family, or coworkers, Green Haven After Dark is sure to be a fun night filled with excitement that will make a difference.”
