Hats off to local winners of Business Achievement Awards (10 photos)

'I pledge to continue contributing my time and energy to our community, ensuring that Chris’ spirit lives on in every project I undertake,' says winner of Hats Off Award

The Orillia Opera House was awash in community pride on Wednesday evening as the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce (ODCC) hosted its annual Business Achievement Awards.

The event celebrated some of Orillia’s outstanding businesses and the dedicated individuals behind them, showcasing the city’s entrepreneurial spirit.

One of the business owners recognized on Wednesday night was Nicole Birch, owner of Studio Eleven. She was named the Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Birch established her business in downtown Orillia and has played an active role in supporting events designed to draw people to the area.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for the nominations," Birch said. "Thank you for following along, and I really appreciate it."

The award for New Business of the Year went to Poppies Bagel Company, renowned for its authentic bagels made with a personal touch. Owners Cam Fraser and Britt Hicks accepted the award, acknowledging the community’s warm welcome and their growing loyal customer base.

“This is so exciting," Hicks said. "We’re so excited to be a part of the downtown community. You guys have been so welcoming."

Fraser added, “I just want to say thanks. We also could not be here without our family and our friends, and really have to thank them, and really thank you guys, the community. Thank you so much.”

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Chris Bellchambers Hats Off Award to Brian Hare and Derick Lehmann for their "extraordinary dedication" to community service.

Hare, a lifelong resident of Orillia, has volunteered with numerous local organizations, including the Lighthouse, the Orillia Santa Claus Parade, and the Mariposa Arts Theatre Foundation. His contributions were previously recognized with the Order of Orillia in 2017.

Lehmann, known for organizing community events like the Ugly Christmas Sweater Bowling Party and 90s-themed dance parties, has raised significant funds for local charities, including The Sharing Place and Big Brothers Big Sisters. His leadership roles also include directing the Roots North Music Festival and coordinating entertainment for Orillia’s Canada Day celebrations. Lehmann was also honoured with the 2023 Citizen of the Year Award.

Although both recipients were unable to attend the ceremony, Lehmann provided a heartfelt written statement reflecting on the legacy of Chris Bellchambers, whose passion for community service continues to inspire.

“I’m deeply honoured to be associated with Chris’s name through this award. His legacy of selflessness and enthusiasm sets a high bar for all of us, and I’d like to encourage everyone to volunteer in some way, big or small, because it feels good to give!

"As I accept this recognition, I pledge to continue contributing my time and energy to our community, ensuring that Chris’ spirit lives on in every project I undertake,” Lehman said.

The ODCC Business Achievement Awards not only recognized excellence in business but also celebrated the spirit of community involvement and leadership, shining a spotlight on individuals who are making a difference.
