Have cardboard, will travel — downhill (4 photos)

Orillia's 11th annual Cardboard Toboggan Race returning Feb. 23

All it takes is a little bit of cardboard and a lot of imagination to get in on the fun this weekend in Orillia.

The city will hold its 11th annual Cardboard Toboggan Race at the Couchiching Golf and Country Club Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

“It’s a great event because it’s family friendly. Anyone can enter it,” said Megan Kamphuis, the city’s recreation program supervisor. “Winter can get long and dark, so it’s a good way to get out and be social.”

The city will hand out awards for various achievements, including most creative design, fastest toboggan, biggest toboggan and best wipeout. (Helmets are required.)

“The designs are incredible,” Kamphuis said. “We’ve had the Ghostbusters vehicle, a tank, a monster truck.”

Registration is required. It can be done on the day of the event, between 9 and 9:30 a.m., or in advance. To register ahead of time, and to learn the rules about toboggan design, email [email protected] or call 705-329-7250.

The races will start shortly before 10 a.m.

The event is great for all ages, Kamphuis said.

“Tobogganing is one of those activities that has lasted through the ages,” she said.

For those who have been tobogganing for years, the Feb. 23 event will be nostalgia with a twist.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what they come up with,” Kamphuis said.
