Health unit reports 30 new COVID cases, one death in region today

A Barrie resident has died after contracting COVID-19; Orillia has two new cases today, while Oro-Medonte has one new case

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 30 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its latest update published Sept. 16.

A Barrie man between 45 and 64 years old died on Sept. 14 after contracting COVID-19. 

This is the first COVID death reported in the region since Aug. 15. 

Included in the new cases are 19 unvaccinated individuals, one partially vaccinated person, and eight fully vaccinated people.

The new cases reported today are as follows: 

  • Orillia (2): One person between 45 and 64 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old.  One case is linked to close contact, and one is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Oro-Medonte (2): Two youth under 17 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Barrie (8): Five people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are listed as community-acquired (no known link), and one case is listed as close contact. Four cases are still under investigation. 
  • Innisfil (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. All three cases are under investigation. 
  • Bradford (10): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact, one is listed as community-acquired (no known link), and seven cases are still under investigation. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • New Tecumseth (4): One youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one is still under investigation. 

There are currently 234 active cases in the region. 

Thirteen people from Simcoe County are hospitalized with COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 13,275 cases of COVID-19 with 12,784 of those cases recovered and 257 cases ending in death. 

The health unit has confirmed 5,800 of the region's cases were variant strains. There are 173 lab-confirmed variant cases still active.

The variant case breakdown includes: 

4,007 alpha cases,
168 gamma cases, 
34 beta cases,
930 delta cases,
and 661 cases have screened positive and are awaiting further testing.

According to the health unit, 76.8 per cent of the population 12 years and older living in Simcoe-Muskoka have received both doses of vaccine and 83.5 per cent have had at least one dose of a vaccine.

Approximately 26.6 per cent of the total population of Simcoe-Muskoka (including children) is unvaccinated and 67.5 per cent is fully vaccinated.

Anyone born in 2009 or earlier living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on Sept. 16.
