NEWS RELEASE
HOSPICE ORILLIA

Each year, Hospice Orillia’s Candles of Remembrance ceremony brings the community together to honour loved ones who are no longer with us.
We are thrilled to host the 2024 ceremony in person at Creative Nomad Studios on Nov. 28, complemented by a virtual memorial wall.
“We are excited to welcome our community back to Creative Nomad Studios for our annual Candles of Remembrance ceremony,” says Hospice Orillia’s bereavement co-ordinator, Louise Brazier. “The holiday season can be stressful, and it is especially difficult when you are grieving the loss of a loved one. We want the community to know they are not alone; we are here for them.”
As a community hospice, Hospice Orillia provides grief and bereavement support through various services, including the Candles of Remembrance ceremony. Guests can enjoy poetry readings, live music, light refreshments, and this year, the opportunity to create a memorial token in memory of their loved ones.
In past years, 45 to 60 individuals attended the ceremony in person. Over the last three years, record numbers joined virtually. Based on feedback, Hospice Orillia will continue to provide virtual options alongside the in-person gathering.
“For many, attending in person is not possible. That’s why it’s so important to offer virtual components like the virtual memorial wall and digital programs,” says Amanda Tevelde, communications, fundraising and community relations specialist. “The virtual memorial wall allows us to honour loved ones for those unable to attend.”
Whether you participate in person or online, you are invited to submit a photo and sentiment about your loved one. Please complete the online form at hospiceorillia.ca/candles by Nov. 26.
“As a partially funded organization, we rely on financial donations to provide both in-person and virtual options to our community,” Tevelde adds. “We are grateful to the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area for supporting this vital ceremony.”
“We look forward to gathering as a community at this beautiful location in the heart of Orillia,” Brazier added. “We hope to see you there as we come together to reflect and remember.”
The 2024 Candles of Remembrance will take place at Creative Nomad Studios, 23 Mississaga St. W., on Thursday, Nov. 28, with doors opening at 6:15 p.m. Guests will find ample parking near the venue, including municipal lots by the Orillia Public Library and behind Creative Nomad Studios, with additional street parking available. An elevator is accessible for those needing assistance to reach the second floor.
