The City of Orillia has declared the week of June 4-10 Shriners Week.

Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke signed a proclamation marking the week and many local Shriners were on hand this week to raise their flag above the Orillia Opera House to officially signify the announcement.

The week is a big one not just for the Orillia Shrine Club. Long-time Orillia Shriner Tom Woodrow has been elected Potentate of the Rameses Shrine Temple, the largest such group in Canada.

He and local Shriners – and the city – will host the 2018 Rameses Ceremonial, which will see more than 1,000 Shriners and their families visit the area next weekend.

The ‘ceremonial’ will be held June 7-10 and includes multiple events for Shriners, including a golf tournament, steak barbecue and dance and a gala dinner at Casino Rama.

The highlight, for locals, however, will likely be the massive Shriners parade that will invade the downtown core on Saturday, June 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. That parade will feature many unique floats, the iconic Shriner cars, marching bands and promises something for people of all ages.
