Have you ever wondered how dragonflies and other aquatic insects survive the winter? What impact will climate change have on these vital ecological communities?

Join the Orillia Naturalists' Club on Zoom on Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. for a fascinating presentation by Dr. Rosemary Martin, as she drills through the ice to reveal the surprisingly active ecosystem that thrives beneath Ontario’s frozen ponds and lakes.

Dr. Martin, who recently completed her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto Mississauga, will share intriguing insights from her research on overwintering aquatic invertebrates.

Attendees will get an exclusive look at under-ice video footage captured in local Ontario ponds, showcasing which creatures survive, who stays active, and how these interactions shape food webs and community structures in the seasons that follow.

Now a postdoctoral research fellow at Michigan State University, Dr. Martin is expanding her work to explore the physiology and energetics of overwintering dragonflies.

Her research, much of which was conducted at the Koffler Scientific Reserve near Newmarket, sheds light on how under-ice physical conditions impact aquatic life and the broader implications of climate change.

This event is free and open to the public. Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore the hidden world beneath the ice and learn how tiny insects play a big role in our ecosystems. Sign up for the Zoom link through the Club’s website.
