Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 public relations officer Rob McCron has been testing out some '40s era clothing for the upcoming Orillia Big Band dance.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 of Orillia is bringing back a classic tradition with a special fundraising event featuring live music, dancing, and a touch of nostalgia.

The Legion's Dance with Orillia Big Band is set for Saturday, March 29, running from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Normandy Room at the Legion, located at Orillia's waterfront.

The Orillia Big Band, a 21-piece ensemble, has generously offered to perform at the event, helping the Legion raise funds to support local veterans and maintain the organization’s operations.

“For them to take time out of their schedule to come and help us raise some money, I think it’s a great thing for them to do,” said Rob McCron, public relations officer for the Orillia Legion.

The evening will be a throwback to the 1930s and 1940s, complete with a dress-up contest for the best period attire. Guests are encouraged to don their finest vintage outfits, with door prizes up for grabs.

“There’ll be prizes for the best-dressed,” McCron said. “If they got their dancing shoes ready, I think it’s going to be a good fundraiser for us.”

Attendees can expect finger foods throughout the night and a lively atmosphere reminiscent of the dances that once filled the Normandy Room — something that hasn’t happened in over 25 years.

“It’ll bring back old times from days gone by when we used to have the dances upstairs,” McCron noted.

Tickets for the event are available for $30 at the Legion in Orillia. The Normandy Room is accessible by elevator, and free parking is available on-site.

While the Legion is not in immediate financial distress, McCron emphasized that fundraising remains essential.

“This day and age, things are tough all over,” he said. “Our veterans could use a little extra help right now.”

The dance is an 18+ event with a bar and is open to anyone who enjoys dancing and live music.
