The Orillia Public Library is helping to remember Canadian soldiers with an interactive exhibit taking place next week.
This annual exhibit, winner of the Angus Mowat Award for Excellence at this year’s Public Library Service Awards, honours contributions of local soldiers from the First and Second World Wars, leading up to soldiers’ roles in more recent conflicts.
Jayne Turvey, Community Services Coordinator for the Orillia Public Library has been organizing this event since 2014. However, each year, the artifacts and exhibits change.
“We try to change things up and make the exhibits more interesting and interactive,” Turvey said. “We are partnering with six military collectors to put this year’s event together and will also be honouring several anniversaries from the Second World War, including D-Day, the Liberation of Holland and the Italian Campaign.”
There will also be special displays from the Orillia Museum of Art and History, the British Home Child Advocacy and Research Association, Simcoe County Museum and The Royal Regiment of Canada Museum.
Participants will be dressed in various military uniforms from World War I to present day.
Everyone is invited to visit this free exhibit taking place in the Orillia Public Library programming rooms and lobby, which runs Thursday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
An extra day has been added on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature booths from the Grey and Simcoe Foresters Museum, Georgina Military Museum, local military historians and authors and others.
