'Life-changing': Big Brothers Big Sisters lands $50K to expand mentorship

Local branches in Simcoe County work together to serve more than 500 children annually

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) agencies across Simcoe County are thrilled to announce $50,000 in funding from Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group’s LEAF (Learning and Engagement Accelerator Fund) initiative. This two-year investment will support the Thrive Together: A Wellness & Empowerment Series, a collaborative initiative designed to empower volunteers and expand mentorship support for local children and youth.

BBBS agencies in Simcoe County—Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie & District (BBBSBD), Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Simcoe (BBBSNS), and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orillia & District (BBBSOD)—work together to serve over 500 children annually. These mentorship programs provide life-changing relationships for children facing socio-economic challenges, family instability, or mental health struggles.

Administered by The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group, the L.E.A.F. program invested $400,000 in grants this year, scaling from previous years. Tim Shauf, President of The Commonwell, emphasizes the program's impact, stating, "We received over $3.7 million in funding requests this year, highlighting its crucial role in supporting communities." Shauf adds, "Our L.E.A.F grants are about caring beyond us, and beyond now.” 

L.E.A.F.'s mission is simple: cultivate community resilience and capacity through program development and facility/resource upgrades in places where residents learn, play, engage, and gather.

The Thrive Together series will focus on the well-being of BBBS volunteers, equipping them with tools and resources to manage the emotional complexities of mentorship. By addressing volunteer burnout and enhancing recruitment efforts, the initiative aims to reduce waitlists and ensure more children can access the support they need to thrive.

“The collaborative efforts of BBBS agencies in Simcoe County highlight our shared commitment to meeting the growing demand for mentorship,” said Miranda Chaffey, Executive Director of BBBS Orillia & District who will be the lead agency of this series. “With the Thrive Together series, we are not only supporting our volunteers but also strengthening our collective ability to change young lives and build a stronger, more connected community.”

Waitlists for mentorship programs have been growing, driven by increased awareness of the benefits of mentorship, rising family needs, and the long-term social and emotional impacts of the pandemic. This funding will ensure BBBS agencies can rise to meet this demand while supporting the volunteers at the heart of their programs.
