Many ask what the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program offers since they only see them in local parades.

It offers much more, including technical courses to learn the mechanical aspects of aircraft and instruments, the design of airports and participating in aerospace courses. An annual aircrew survival course offers forest survival skills, practising different techniques such as preparing a fire, building a shelter and cadets making themselves visible from the air for a rescue team. It offers a sleepover in the forest in shelters they build to fully experience the survival skills of a flight crew.

Cadets are given the opportunity to fly in an airplane or glider during their time in the program. During this flight, the pilot demonstrates certain movements of the aircraft and explains the important phases of flight. It is a perfect opportunity to see in practice all the concepts taught during the training year. Cadets who will be 16 years of age may apply for pilot training and if selected can train during the summer to become a glider or power pilot (called private pilot licence issued by Transport Canada).

Members must be 12 years of age or older to become a cadet and are required to attend mandatory training on Tuesday evenings and occasionally a weekend event organized by the squadron. They are supervised, administered, and trained by Cadet Instructor Cadre officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The cadet program is funded by the Department of National Defence in partnership with the Air Cadet League of Canada. The civilian sponsor is the local Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 and the Army, Navy, Air Force Association Unit 400 of Orillia.
