Tatham Engineering, which has had an office in Orillia for 25 years, has been recognized as one of the top employers of its size in Canada.

Tatham Engineering, which is headquartered in Collingwood but has long had an office in Orillia, has been recognized as one of the top employers of its size in the country.

Tatham was named one of Canada’s top small and medium employers for 2023 by Mediacorp in the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers competition.

“This award comes at a very exciting time for Tatham’s Orillia office, which is also celebrating 25 years since opening the Orillia branch," said Nick Smith, a senior engineer who also serves as Orillia's office manager.

"Over the years, our address has changed and our staff has grown, but we're proud of the culture we’ve created together through our shared values and our collective commitment to enhance the communities where we live and work," said Smith.

Dan Hurley, president of Tatham, said the firm has made a strong commitment in recent years to making sure staff feel connected, supported and valued.

“As an employee-owned firm, we make it a priority to invest in the well-being of our staff and are committed to responding to their collective needs," said Hurley.

"From paid volunteer hours and maternity/parental leave top-up to mortgage assistance and professional growth plans, we are evolving our programs to better support the personal and professional development of the nearly 200 engineers, technical and support staff who work with us,” he said in a media release.

Tatham employs about 200 staff, and has increased its full-time workforce by 30 per cent this past year.

The competition offered several reasons why the civil, electrical and mechanical engineering firm made the Top 100 list, including:

  • The company experienced significant growth in the past year, increasing its full-time workforce by 30%;
  • Financial success is celebrated with profit-sharing for employees;
  • Referral bonuses are offered as incentive for employees to recruit candidates from their personal networks; and
  • Staff are supported with a generous maternity and parental leave top-up program.

“It is an honour to receive this award, which recognizes the impact of our actions and the way we care for our employees,” said Kerrie Poleyko, manager of human resources at Tatham.

Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the largest publisher of employment periodicals in the country, and the organizers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers competition.

This is the tenth year the group has held the top small and medium employers' competition. Winners are chosen by editors at Mediacorp who are judging entries based on eight criteria including workplace; work and social atmosphere; health, financial, and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

Using definitions set by Statistics Canada, the competition limits a small and medium enterprise to a private-sector business with fewer than 500 employees.
